Police Search for Stolen Vehicle Suspect
On Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at approximately 9:50 p.m. Elmhurst Police responded to assist Villa Park Police officers that were in pursuit of a white BMW sedan that had been reported stolen. The stolen vehicle traveled east on North Avenue, then eastbound on the I-290 expressway. The stolen vehicle became disabled on I-290, east of Vallette Street, near the City of Elmhurst and Village of Berkeley border. The driver ran from the vehicle and was described as a black male wearing a green hooded sweatshirt. The passenger, a 25-year-old Chicago man was taken into custody at the scene. Officers located three firearms inside the stolen vehicle.
Officers from several mutual aid agencies responded to assist local officers searching for the suspect that fled the scene. A police helicopter and four police K-9 units searched the southeast Elmhurst and southwest Berkeley areas for the suspect. A CodeRed public safety notification was made to residents in the area advising them to shelter in place during the search. At 12:24 a.m. the police helicopter and K-9 units completed their searches with no suspect being located in Elmhurst and the shelter in place was lifted.
The passenger of the vehicle was charged by Villa Park Police with Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle and Unlawful Use or Possession of Weapons by Convicted Felon. The investigation to identify the driver of the vehicle remains active.
