Elmhurst Police Investigate Fatal Train-Pedestrian Collision

On Friday, May 6, 2022 at approximately 3:30 a.m. Elmhurst Police were dispatched to the area of First Street and West Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck by a train.  Upon arrival officers located a deceased adult male that had been struck by an eastbound freight train on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, east of the West Avenue crossing.  Witnesses reported observing the man step onto the railroad tracks as the train approached.

Train traffic was suspended in both directions as emergency crews worked at the scene.  At approximately 6:00 a.m. train service was restored, with Metra commuter trains operating with a delayed schedule.  The intersection and railroad crossing was closed to vehicular traffic during the investigation, and was reopened at 7:45 a.m.

The incident is under investigation by the Elmhurst Police Department and the DuPage County Coroner’s Office. Identification of the victim is being withheld at this time pending family notification.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at (630) 530-3050.
