City staff has been working hard to make Elmhurst streets safe for travel. An estimated 4 to 5 inches of snow fell overnight, with another 2 to 3 inches anticipated throughout the day. The winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 6:00 p.m. this evening.
Public Works crews worked overnight to salt and plow City streets, and are now completing a second pass of major roadways. Due to the intensity of the continued snow fall, roads are covering with snow. The morning commute in combination with the heavy snowfall makes it difficult for plows to clear roads quickly. Crews will continue to plow and salt throughout the day. Motorists are advised to be cautious and drive slowly.
Windrows and piles of snow will be hauled out from the downtown area this evening. City crews are also in the process of clearing sidewalks in the downtown area. Garbage collection is still on-schedule for today, but may take longer than usual. If necessary, the City will send a special notification if these conditions change. The top levels of all parking decks will be closed until Friday morning.
What can you do to help snow removal run efficiently and keep our City safe?
• Please do not park in the street. Parking on city streets is not allowed after 2” or more of snow. Overnight street parking should also be avoided to allow for full clean up.
• Please do not shovel or plow snow into the streets.
• Do not attempt to pass a snow plow and please provide space for them to pass.
• While shoveling residential driveways and sidewalks, please take time to clear snow around nearby fire hydrants to help firefighters locate them quickly in an emergency!
