Elmhurst Police Investigating Incident at York High School Football Field

On January 18, 2021 the Elmhurst Police Department and Elmhurst School District 205 were notified of an incident that occurred on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the York Community High School outdoor football field. Sometime between 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. a group of adults gathered to play an informal soccer game at the field. During the course of their visit the adults discovered two rope nooses hanging from the top of the metal bleachers.

The adults removed the ropes themselves and took them away with the intent to give them to school administrators later. School Administrators were contacted on Monday and informed Elmhurst Police Investigators. Examination revealed both ropes had tape affixed to them with two messages. One rope’s message read “Let them play!” and the other rope’s message read “Hear us now! Please!”

Elmhurst Police evidence technicians have processed the scene at the football field. District 205 continues to work with the Elmhurst Police Department regarding this investigation. Police presence has been increased for the York High School campus and surrounding neighborhoods this week as EPD proceeds with its investigation. Additional security cameras also will be installed at the high school including at the stadium as further precaution.

The incident is under active investigation by the Elmhurst Police Department as a possible hate crime to determine the motive and identify the suspect(s). The City of Elmhurst has no tolerance for symbols of hatred, oppression and violence. One of our City’s core services is to provide safety for the Elmhurst residents and the community. Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to call the Elmhurst Police Department at (630) 530-3050.
