[ARCHIVED] COMMUNITY SAFETY ALERT UPDATE / SHUT DOWN OF INTERSECTIONS AND BUILDINGS:

LATEST UPDATE, 6/2@ 6:00 PM

COMMUNITY SAFETY ALERT UPDATE / SHUT DOWN OF INTERSECTIONS AND BUILDINGS:

The City of Elmhurst has closed York Street from Church Street to North Avenue until further notice. Out of an abundance of caution, all parking locations in this area have also been closed.

At this time, we are witnessing what appears to be a peaceful assembly in the City Centre business district. Businesses in the downtown area have been asked to close this evening as a precautionary safety measure.

Based on the nature of the evolving regional situation, we remain on high alert with an increased police presence. Elmhurst Police have received numerous calls reporting suspicious activity. With the cooperation of surrounding communities and the DuPage County Sheriff, our law enforcement continues to work diligently to maintain order and provide safety to our community.

Due to public safety concerns regarding widespread vandalism and looting occurring throughout the western suburbs, residents are asked to maintain awareness and call 9-1-1 if they witness any suspicious activity. Law enforcement has seen a rise in this criminal behavior in the evening hours, therefore residents are advised to stay home this evening.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available on the City of Elmhurst Facebook page as well as the City’s website. Residents can sign up for community alerts by visiting Elmhurst.org. Community members witnessing any suspicious or unusual activity should call 9-1-1.
