Governor Prizker issues “STAY AT HOME ORDER” as Illinois aims to reduce the spread of COVID-19. 

Here is what this means for the Elmhurst Community.


Elmhurst, IL March 20, 2020, 5pm - Governor Pritzker has issued a “Stay at Home Order”, which goes into effect tomorrow, March 21, 2020 at 5pm and will remain in effect until April 7th. The order calls upon all individuals living in the State of Illinois to stay home in order to reduce the spread of the virus.

What this means for the Elmhurst Community:

  • The shelter in place order requires ALL residents to stay in their homes except for “essential” travel.
  • Reasons you may leave your home are restricted to:
    • Doctor’s visits
    • Checking on a family member
    • Grocery store visits
    • Going to work if your place of work is an essential business that is allowed to remain open
  • Essential service such as banks, vets and laundromats will remain open, however please contact these establishments for confirmation.
  • Public transportation, interstates, highways, gas stations, grocery stores and pharmacies will remain open.
  • Restaurants offering delivery, curbside pickup or drive-thru will remain open.
  • Residents can continue and are encouraged to go outside, but should adhere to social distancing standards of a minimum of 6 feet.

“I urge everyone to follow the recommendations of the leading healthcare professionals,” said Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley. “Please continue to practice physical distancing and take care of yourself and each other. I want to thank the Elmhurst community for their understanding and cooperation in this effort. Please be smart, stay safe and be well.”

All City facilities are closed to the public but will remain accessible and active for essential city services. Transaction can be conducted by phone at (630) 530-3000 or on the City’s website at Elmhurst.org. The City of Elmhurst is committed to ensuring that community needs are met at the highest degree and regard for public health safety. The City’s public safety team is prepared to serve and see the community through this.

Over the next coming weeks, timely information and updates on COVID-19 as it relates to Elmhurst can be found on the City’s website . Community members are also encourage to follow the City’s Facebook  and Twitter pages, and subscribe to the Alert Center . City of E-Newsletters will be distributed with updates on the virus as it relates to our community. It is also important to subscribe to receive CodeRED Alerts. The City will use this method to communicate any information requiring a direct and immediate need to take action for public safety. These notifications will enable the City to provide the community with critical information quickly in a variety of situations.
