Recently one of our police officers was performing a traffic stop. While seated inside of his police car with all emergency lights activated, his vehicle was rear ended by a motorist, who failed to follow Scott’s Law. Luckily for the officer and his family, the officer was not severely injured or killed. The motorist was cited with the Scott’s Law violation.

The City of Elmhurst urges all motorists to obey all the rules of the road and stay focused when driving. Scott’s Law mandates that when approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle, when the authorized emergency vehicle is giving a signal by displaying alternately flashing red and blue lights or amber or yellow warning lights, a person who drives an approaching vehicle is to proceed with due caution, yield the right-of-way by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to that of the authorized emergency vehicle.
Proceed with due caution, reduce the speed of the vehicle, maintain a safe speed for road conditions, if changing lanes would be impossible or unsafe. An increase in reckless driving on residential streets has been brought to the attention of City Officials. Please SLOW DOWN and DRIVE WITH CAUTION. Safety is a priority; everything else can wait.
