On Wednesday, September 25, 2019 the Elmhurst Fire Department received a grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) provides funding to both career and volunteer fire departments that display a need for projects that will enhance the operations and protect the health and safety of the firefighters and paramedics for the public that they serve.
The Elmhurst Fire Department was granted $62,636 for the purchase of a vehicle exhaust removal system for Fire Station 1 (404 N. York Rd.) Toxins from exhaust emissions present a significant health risk to the first responders. This system is necessary in removing 100% hazardous emissions that are discharged from apparatus and equipment used inside of the station.
Since 2001, the AFG program has provided approximately $6.7 billion in grants to first-responder organizations. Grant funds have been used to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training apparatus.
