[ARCHIVED] Factors to consider when questioning recent utility bill increases

City of Elmhurst Logo

The City of Elmhurst’s Utility Billing Department has been receiving inquiries regarding utility bill increases. Due to the city-wide water meter change out project, please consider the following when reviewing your utility bill:

  • Mechanical meters wear over time, allowing unaccounted for water to flow around the measuring chamber. If a new water meter has recently been installed, it is important to understand that the previous meter in your home could have been 20-40 years old. The new ultrasonic meters are sensitive to every drop that passes through the meter and are now measuring all water that flows through them, whether used or wasted through a leak.
  • Check the days of service on your bill. The current period may be longer and the last period may be shorter depending on when your meter was changed out.
  • Following your meter change out, your initial bill will include usage from your old meter in cubic meters and usage from your new meter in 1,000 gallons. For your reference, 1 cubic meter equals 264.17 gallons.
  • City rates (water, sewer and CIRC) were adjusted in January, 2018, the DuPage Water Commission rate was adjusted in May, 2018 and the rubbish rate was decreased in April, 2018.
  • Sign up for the WaterSmart Portal at www.cityofelmhurst.watersmart.com to monitor your water use and determine if you are using water that you may be unaware of. Toilets, humidifiers, hoses, pools…these are all areas to check for leaks or running water. The portal has an abundance of information for residents to monitor and detect potential problems before they become major headaches!
