The Elmhurst Police Department continues to take part in a year-long traffic safety grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The goal of this grant is to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes with additional enforcement of DUI, seatbelt, and distracted driving laws.
The next campaign of this grant will begin on Friday May 18th and will continue through the Memorial Day weekend. This grant allows extra police officers to be on patrol watching for impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and seatbelt violations. The majority of this extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, which are statistically the most dangerous time to be out on the roads.
Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and always buckle up. Motorists who are planning to drink should make alternate travel arrangements or designate a driver who will not be drinking. Citizens are encouraged to contact police if they see a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver.
