The Elmhurst Police Department has been awarded a year-long grant by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) in an effort to reduce fatal and serious-injury crashes through additional enforcement of DUI, seatbelt, and distracted driving laws.
The current campaign of this grant began on Monday, December 18, 2017 and continues until January 2nd, 2018. The grant allows extra officers to be on patrol, watching for impaired drivers, seatbelt violations, and distracted drivers. The majority of this extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, which is statistically the most dangerous time to be on the roadway.
Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and, as always, to buckle up. Anyone who plans to be drinking alcohol during holiday activities and festivities should make alternate transportation arrangements. Citizens are also encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they see a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver.
