Elmhurst Police responded to a call of a crash near York Road and Diversey Avenue at 2:13 p.m. on Saturday, October 28. Upon arrival, officers found only one vehicle with a shattered driver’s side window. Officers also found the 65-year-old male driver of that vehicle outside of the car bleeding from his face. Police believe that the shooting had escalated from a road rage incident on York Road. The victim was immediately transported to the hospital by Elmhurst Paramedics where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He had been shot in the left cheek of his face with the bullet exiting through his right cheek.
Elmhurst Police utilized video technology from the area and with the cooperation of witnesses gathered information, which lead to the arrest of the suspect within 10 hours of the incident.
Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth states, “Elmhurst Police were able to quickly secure the scene and gather the information necessary to identify and subsequently take the offender into custody without incident or harm to others. While this type of behavior is uncommon in our community, motorists are reminded to remain calm while driving and if a situation escalates, to immediately call 9-1-1”.
Angelo Navarro, age 23 of Melrose Park was charged with one count of Attempted Murder (Class X Felony), one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm (Class X Felony) and one count of Misdemeanor Endangering the Life of a Child. He is currently being held at DuPage County Jail on a 1.5 million dollar bond.
