The Elmhurst Police Department has once again been awarded a grant by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for extra enforcement of DUI and seatbelt laws over 2016 holiday periods. The goal of this grant is to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes over various holiday periods throughout the year when people are likely to be consuming alcohol.
The next campaign of this grant will begin on Monday, November 14, 2016, and will continue through November 28, 2016, for the Thanksgiving holiday period. This grant pays for extra officers to be on patrol, looking for impaired drivers and seatbelt violations. The majority of this extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, which is the most dangerous time on the roadways.
Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and to buckle up. If they are planning on drinking during any Thanksgiving festivities, they should make alternate travel arrangements and/or designate a driver who will not be consuming alcohol. Residents are encouraged to contact the police if they see a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver.
