Elmhurst helps control the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses by reducing the mosquito population through operations that include surveillance, monitoring, and spraying. Mosquito spraying operations within the Elmhurst Community are performed by Clarke Mosquito Control Company, and are performed using
environmentally sensitive agents. Residents can help reduce the potential for mosquito borne illnesses during the summer months by eliminating standing water where mosquitos breed, and by using a DEET insect repellent when outdoors, especially during dawn, dusk, and early evening hours.
Clarke Mosquito completed a treatment for adult mosquito control on June 14, 2016. This is the first of six citywide treatments using truck mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) foggers. Adult control measures include dispensing insecticides in mosquito harborage areas with backpack, ATV, and truck mounted applicators. Surveillance and monitoring services include the use of weather data and computer modeling to predict hatching and peak annoyance periods and the operation of two traps within the City to monitor and evaluate adult mosquito activity.
