The City of Elmhurst is preparing for the 2010 Census. Taken every ten (10) years, the census is a count of everyone living in the United States, including people of all ages, races, ethnic groups – both citizens and non-citizens. On April 1, 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau will issue a call to action for every resident in our nation: “Be Counted.”
Each year, more than $400 billion in federal funding is distributed to tribal, local and state governments based on Census data. It is important that each and every Elmhurst resident participate and be counted to ensure that the Elmhurst community receives the fiscal and social benefits to which it is entitled.
In addition to providing funds for public transportation, road work and emergency food & shelters etc., Census data guides local decision-makers in important community planning efforts, including where to build roads, hospitals and schools. Census data also determines where jobs and job programs are needed throughout the country, and leads to the redrawing of legislative districts and the redistribution of seats in Congress.
The Census questionnaire, which will be mailed out in March 2010, consists of ten (10) questions. Questionnaires come with a postage-paid return envelope and are expected to take just a few minutes to complete. Please note that any and all information submitted to the U.S. Census Bureau is kept highly confidential. Visit the Official United States 2010 Census website, http://2010.census.gov/2010census to view the Census questions in advance and to find out more information on the benefits you and the Elmhurst community will receive through your participation.
On September 20, 2009, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn launched a statewide push for Census participation.
“Every community in our state will benefit from participating in this important process, and I encourage everyone in Illinois to make sure they are counted,” Governor Quinn said. The Governor also announced the launch of the state’s Census website, www.census.illinois.gov.
