Internet Safety

Overview
There have been some highly publicized cases of exploitation involving the Internet, but that doesn’t mean that every child will experience major problems. The Internet contains a vast array of valuable tools and the majority of people who go online have positive, beneficial experiences. However, there are dangers that exist in the online environment, parents and children need to be aware of possible risks on the Internet and how to minimize them.

What are the risks?

There are several risks for children who use the Internet or online services. Teenagers are particularly at risk because they often use the computer unsupervised and are more likely than younger children to participate in online discussions regarding companionship, relationships, or sexual activity.

Some of the risks include:
  • Exposure to inappropriate material
  • Physical molestation
  • Harassment
  • Legal and financial exploitation
